Frontal Hairline Design

Every step of the hair transplantation process requires great experience, theoretical and practical knowledge. The most crucial and the most important point to focus on is the naturalness and the density of the frontal hairline. The expert, who will design the frontal hairline, must reveal his artistic vision as well as the handcraft.

The hairline design requires an understanding of both normal and balding patterns in order to create a successful plan.It has a great impact on the patient’s appearance, and it is the template on which present and future surgery is patterned. The importance of a good hairline design cannot be overemphasized, as improper design is one of the major reasons for poor outcomes and for the need of repair work.

Many factors must be considered, including age, donor supply, donor hair quality, expected future balding, the patient’s desires, the shape and size of the patients head. Communication with the patient and trying to realistically achieve his goal is needed. However, there are some firm rules, and all decisions must be individualized.

Various methods are used to locate the frontal hairline. The most frequently used is the measurement method. Because each person's anatomical structure is different and due to the variables we mentioned before ( age, donor supply etc ), there is no ideal measurement method that can be applied to every person. For this reason, it is necessary to take special measures within his own frame and to make a special plan for the person to reach the ideal and natural result.

A distance of 7 centimeters measured from in between eyebrows toward the scalp border can be considered the standard for the beginning of the midline hairline. This measure can be taken even higher in people with extensive hair loss, and in middle aged persons, but we keep it at most 7,5 centimeters. If there is existing hair, it is referred to as the starting point of the hairline. The points required in the temple area are also determined, and a light Vshaped or rounded frontal hairline is determined, taking into consideration of the head shape.

The hairline with a slight recess in the temporal region, which we can call ''the male type frontal hairline '', is the ideal hairline for young caucasians. Even adult males who has no hair loss has these recesses. A common approach is to evaluate a patient’s hair loss and try to rewind their personal balding timeline to a point, which would not only be pleasing but also be supported by the patient’s donor supply. With good judgment and foresight, a proper design should remain beneficial and natural for a lifetime.‘‘After’’ pictures at thirty years are more telling than ‘‘after’’ pictures at five years.

Through the frontal hairline and immediately after the first few centimeters behind it, roots (grafts) containing one or two hair strands are used and to create maximum density should be aimed. In fact, only single roots should be preferred in the first line for a natural looking hairline. Since the hair roots to be obtained by the micromotor FUE method are quite thin and single grafts needed especially along the frontal hair line, harvested in adequate amounts. These roots, harvested with a diameter of approximately 0,7 - 0,8 mm punches, are extremely important in obtaining natural results.

The hair on the frontal line is never very ordered and hairs are not all aligned in a row. Instead it should be something that I call ' regularly irregular '. A frontal hairline that looks like a '' borderline '' or '' aligned soldiers '' in front of you, will not be natural at all. On the contrary, a frontal hairline consisting of one haired roots which packed densely, slightly asymmetric with recesses and protrusions, will provide a very close result to natural hairline.

The direction and exit angle of the hairs should be the same as your natural hair. That is why it is very important that the holes (slits) where hair roots are to be inserted are created by a specialist physician.
